Master Bedroom Progress

Wonder of wonders, I've actually done something in my own room!  Of course, that was last year that I painted two walls, but hey, now I have ART in a GALLERY wall over my bed!  And I have pretty bedding!  It's in the closet because my husband hates that the duvet won't stay put, but hey, I have it!

My original inspiration for this room was the large art print that I found on Etsy.com.  I know I've said it before, but really, you just can't beat Etsy for artwork!  The prices are phenomenal, and you support small business while you're at it.  And often, you get personalized service from the artisan, which is a spectacular bonus in my book.

Here is where I'm at:

  • Gallery wall - mostly done.  Inspiration piece bought, vintage framed & hung, along with a few other prints, vintage finds, and some original kid artwork.
  • Vanity refreshed - done
  • Nightstand refreshed - not yet
  • Dresser refreshed - nope.  Getting rid of this one!
  • Paint - halfway there.  Having trouble settling on a white for this room.
  • Library wall - in progress.  Bookcases & desk moved in & filled, but still need to refresh those cases!
  • Lighting - blech!  I haven't done a thing.  Need new lamps and a new ceiling fan (non-negotiable)
  • Bedding - bought some pretty bedding, kids spilled yellow paint on it.  On to plan B.
Here is where I started with the inspiration board.  I'll add actual room photos someday when there isn't laundry everywhere.

More room inspirations

Not to be outdone, the two little boys (ha, my youngest is 5 now!) asked for an army/camo/lego room.  Their room has been painted bright yellow since we moved in, and they are so over it!

I wracked my brain trying to figure out how to marry Lego, which is all things bright and garish, and army/camo, which is anything but.  I found some decent bedding online at Walmart.com, and jumped from there.  You'd be surprised how much camo bedding there is online - a bit overwhelming actually!  I looked at both pattern and color, and how the pattern moved through the comforters.  Once I settled on the Walmart.com bedding, I hit up Etsy for further inspiration.

I absolutely LOVE Etsy for artwork.  I did a simple search for Lego art, and stumbled across a "patent art" poster for some Lego bricks.  The artist had many options for backgrounds; I figured a simple chalkboard background would be clean and masculine, without being too babyish or mature.  And, once I found similar prints for army vehicles, I knew I had hit on the room decor.

The boys already have a great set of bunks, which we will be keeping.  They are very similar to the bunks in my inspiration board.  They desperately need a desk that can accomodate both of them, and I went with glass because Stanky is an artist, and loves to draw on a backlit surface.  We've actually modified his current dest with an acrylic insert and light so he can do just that.

Storage cubes provide hidden storage for toys as well as seating at kid-height.  An accent wall in a deep, dull green and oatmeal taupe on the other walls will balance out the room nicely.  Throw on some insulating curtains and a cool desk light, and these guys should be good to go.

I hope to start picking up bits and pieces for both of the boys' rooms as I run across them, or if they go on sale.  I'm always on the lookout for pieces that echo the feeling of my inspiration boards, at a great price.  Their rooms might look weird in the interim, but weird is better than untouched!

Working quietly

It's no secret that I disappear from time to time.  I think we all need a breather once in a while from the pressures we put on ourselves.

I've been ruminating on a few ideas lately, mostly for the boys, since we haven't done a thing for their rooms since we moved into this house 3 years ago.  Over the next few days, I'll share where I'm going with a few of the rooms here, and what we've already accomplished (if anything).

First up, Dramasaur's tween room transformation.  He's been complaining of his feet hanging off the end of his twin bunks for a while now, and it's past time for us to start looking for a bigger bed, and a more mature room to go along with it.

I found some bedding online at JC Penny's, then searched around and found it at good 'ol Target for almost 1/3 the price.  The man-child has signed off on the inspiration board, and we've discussed a few things that we can possibly build (headboard), find similar (floor lamp, desk, etc.) for cheaper, and things that are simply inspiration pieces that will get our brains going in the right direction.

Here is the OlioBoard I made up for his room:
